I am constantly seeking out new processes and tweaks that will help lift the images that I am editing. I'm not talking about processes that will completely change the look and feel of an image but more about those little tweaks that just help to enhance it. This is a process which helps to brighten the eyes in portraits.

Process:

1)      Open image and process as required.

2)      Duplicate the background layer by right-clicking in the layers window and choosing Duplicate Layer… Call this new layer “Sharpen”

3)      Ensure the “Sharpen” layer is selected and go to the Filter menu > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen

4)      Adjust the sliders as required. The idea is to over-sharpen at this point so don’t worry if it looks too harsh.

5)      Next to brighten the image. With the “Sharpen” layer highlighted, choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves. Call this new layer “Brighten”

6)      Pull the midtones up to brighten the image. Again the idea is to over-brighten.

7)      Now select both the Sharpen and Brighten layers by holding down Ctrl. Once selected choose Layer > Group Layers. Rename this group “Sparkling Eyes”.

8)      With the “Sparkling Eyes” group selected, add a layer mask and ensure that it is inverted (or filled black).

9)      Finally, with the layer mask selected, simply paint over the eyes with a soft white brush set at around 20% opacity. Remember that this is just for a subtle brightening. Avoid the eyelids as you don’t want the over-sharpened, over-brightened lids to be seen!

10)      Finish by selecting the background layer, right-clicking and choosing “Flatten image”.

Admittedly it's very subtle but I think that if you over-process any part of an image then it starts to look false. This is just a simple way to brighten the eyes. They are, after all, the focus of most images. To download a PDF of this tutorial, please head here.
